YOUR GREETER:
BILL HARLAN
I am a graduate of Watsonville High School, Monterey Peninsula College and have a B.A. and M.A. from UC Berkeley. I earned my doctorate from University of San Francisco in higher education organization. I have been an English instructor at DVC since 1964 where I frequently teach classes in Shakespeare.  In 1985 I became the first director of DVC’s campus in San Ramon and guided that enterprise for 15 years until it achieved State approval.

I helped establish the Leadership San Ramon Valley program in 1990 and have been active for 25 years in the San Ramon Rotary Club, serving as its president in 2009 – 2010.

I am a fifth generation Californian and served on the Board of the Harlan Family Association. I gave the keynote address to the national family reunion in 2007 on the great trek of our ancestors to California in 1846. In September, 2008 I was named a “Living Treasure” by the Museum of the San Ramon Valley in recognition of my work on local history and developing the new college.

Meeting Notes for June 28, 2018
June 28, 2018
by: Gary Sloan

Call to Order
A surprise guest Presidential fill-in greeted Rotarians for the last meeting of the year.  Chris Gallagher, Past President and Rotarian pretty boy, called the meeting to order at 12:17 p.m.  Chris shared that Lucky Sandhu, 2017-18 President had previously informed the club that he would be out of town for this last meeting.  However, Lucky inexplicably attended this meeting but insisted that Mr. Gallagher conduct the meeting.  Some mumbled words about changed last minute travel plans and not wanting to disappoint Chris knowing the weeks of preparation Mr. Gallagher had put into the planning and execution of this last meeting of the year.
The Greeter for the week was our esteemed and long-time member, Ray Giles, who shared that this meeting was a time to celebrate this past year of service and recognize that leading our club was much akin to herding cats.  Seeking to define the meaning of leadership, Ray turned to a five star general Eisenhower who was loosely quoted as saying that “leadership was the ability to accept responsibility for all things that go wrong and the ability to give credit to others when things go right”.  Good Job Lucky and Good Luck John!
A patriotic song was sung with Priya and Gary rocking out to this uplifting rendition.

Mr. Gallagher then treated to a Photo Slide Show featuring Lucky “Can-Do” Sandhu with multiple selfies and cataloguing his year with roots at Berkeley, multiple trips with and without his lovely daughter, events which included sky diving and apparent “bromances” with Mayor Clarkson and Terry Koehne.  A favorite picture which did illicit a group groan was a shot of Lucky standing in a grassy field with Chris commenting that “Lucky was out-standing in his field”.

Following his abuse of Lucky via this power point presentation, Chris turned to incoming President John Milich where it was announced that his first presidential act was to cancel the first meeting of the year to enable Rotarians to enjoy their Fourth of July festivities.
So:  THERE WILL BE NO MEETING ON JULY 6TH.  Everyone congratulated John on his foresight and executive decision making prowess.

Announcements

Inauguration Party:  Saturday, July 14th John Milich will be formally baptized into the club at the Sloan Residence.  All those that have not RSVP were asked to do so.

Auction for Education:  Jerry announced that an organizational meeting would be held tonight at the Growler at 6:30 pm.  He share forms for Rotarians to acquire goods and services for the auction and sponsors.

Hopfest:  The Dougherty Club is sponsoring the Hopfest on September 15, 2018 at 2600 Camino Ramon featuring a 15-30-60-100 mile bike ride.  A wide variety of beer would also be available for San Ramon Rotarians who have forgotten how to ride a bike.

Blue Badge:  Priya was awarded her Blue badge having completed all red badge responsibilities with distinction. She also recited the 4 Way Test (kinda) but got the essential elements right.

Baseball highlight:  Jerry Marrs announced that his son was participating in the Canyon Creek District Baseball for 12 year olds where his team defeated opponents 17-0 and 12-2 with no strike outs during this two game winning streak.  No mention that the Dodgers were in second place behind Arizona and the Giants were still struggling in the National League.

Restaurant recommendation:  Chris Gayler, after checking on the Giant score, announced that there was a new restaurant the “Plucked Chicken” and highly recommended it.

Announcement from the floor:  Lucky Sandhu shared with this scribe who in turn shared it with the club that he was really enjoying the meeting away from the podium and responsibilities of the President.

Anniversary Announcements:  30th year wedding anniversary for Jay Tontz.  Garth Riopelle correctly guessed that he had been married for 33 years.  He and Michelle are going to Nashville, Tennessee where Michelle has an OB/GYN conference and Garth can essentially write-off his anniversary trip as work related.

Presentation and Speaker
Ana Dominquez introduced Rick Tejada-Flores, a documentary film maker whose 40 years of work in film, radio and television culminated in his PBS film featuring LLojeta, a small village in Bolivia that his family owned in the early 1900s.  Mr. Tejada-Flores worked at KQED, produced several films featuring Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers Struggle as well as several other prominent documentaries.

The San Ramon Rotary Club International project has been shepherded by Ana Dominquez for the past five years for the purpose of providing a working water system in the village of LLojeta, Bolivia with a population of 650 people.  Mr. Tejada-Flores showed a clip from the documentary attesting to his personal journey of “giving back” to the village his family once ran.  The current water system has failed providing intermittent unfiltered water to village homes.  This project will reliably transport water from uphill water sources, through a dense forest without the need for pumps.  Rick shared the details of obtaining architectural and engineering plans, insuring a sustainable water system through collaboration with the villagers and the La Paz Rotary Club. His family has contributed funds to the project.  He expressed gratitude to the SR Rotary Club and the five other clubs for supporting this water project.

Ana shared that San Ramon Rotary Club contributed $6,000 and the 6 Rotary Club coalition raised total $15,000 with the help of Don Bierman and Marv Remmich who individually donated $500 each to the project.  The District matched these base funds (totaling $30,000) with an anticipated additional match from Rotary International (Total project funding of $60,000). There will be a 90 day construction process with training in maintenance, repair and water quality oversight occurring simultaneously.
A great deal of credit should be attributed to Ana Dominquez for her tenacity and skill in putting this project forward and insuring its implementation.
As his last act as President, Lucky Sandhu provide Rick with a certificate and the last Lucky Coin as an indication of our appreciation for the presentation.

Closing Moments
Chris asked John who his greeter would be on July 12th.  It was determined that Chris Gallagher was NOT the greeter.  John was fined $25 for the wrong answer.  It was also determined that Mike Gunning who was slated for July 5th who would NOT be the greeter and he was fined $25.  The question of who the greeter would be was left in suspense.

The raffle was suspiciously won by Barry Toby (wine) and the chance for a $200 pot was won by Colette who promptly drew the blue marble for $10.

Chris asked Colette and John to join him on the podium introducing the

2018-19 President                                                             John Milich
