Weekly Program
Meeting Notes
The meeting was called to order by President Showtime at 12:08p and lunch was served.   Shekar Mehta is the RI President and the theme this year is “Serve to Change Lives”.  Norbert Walz led us in the pledge of allegiance and shared this Thought for the Day:

“Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation.  Your Character is what you really are while Your Reputation is merely what other think you are”.    John Wooden

Norbert said his family is good, he is still working and Art and Wind Festival is coming soon.

President Showtime announced that this month is focused on Youth Service.  We toasted to Cinco De Mayo and learned that the planned Happy Hour tonight was canceled due to the rise in Covid infection and our desire to keep our members safe.

Since our speaker canceled, Terry indicated that this would be a “chill and fill” meeting.  Toward that end Dennis Harvey was asked to summarize our successful Smoke Detector Installation project.

The event was held last Saturday from 9a to 1p.  Six fire department attended the event thrilling residents and Rotarians alike.  Almost 20 Rotarians (friends and family) attended the event in addition to several Interact members.  This group installed smoke detectors in 70 homes with five other homes to go.   We have installed over 300 of the ten-year alarm.

Dennis Harvey did a tremendous amount of work to organize this event involving the Fire Department, acquiring material and coordinating team kits for installation.  During two weekends in April, Dennis worked with the Interact Club to survey the community to obtain information regarding the number of smoke detectors and CO2 needing to be installed.  Teams were formulated and selected homes identified and assigned.  An Interact member was assigned to each team with rewarding interaction between Rotarian and Interact students as well as benefiting seniors in this community.

After sharing the history of San Ramon Rotary’s role in reconstructing Sunny Glen following a flood two decades ago, Dennis wanted all Rotarians to participate next year in this very rewarding hands-on project.

The Fire Department contributed $2,000 and the San Ramon Rotary Foundation contributed $3,000 toward this event.

Announcements

Geoff Disch:    Landed in the hospital following a fall.  Geoff has consistently fallen during the past month and is receiving dialysis four days per week.  He is in good spirits and will likely go to a rehabilitation center to regain his strength.  This indominable Rotarian is a tough bird.  All of our best wishes are with him.

Horace Crawford:  For those able to attend, there was a very nice tribute to this outstanding Rotarian whose life of giving and sharing was evident.  He will be missed.

Cinco De Mayo:  A plan Rotary celebration was canceled due to the rise in Covid cases.  All Rotarians are advised to be more careful in crowded indoor settings.

District Assembly:  Michael Roberts invited Board members to attend this event on May 7, 2022:
Wine and Beer Booth, Art & Wind Festival to be held on May 29-30, 2022.  Volunteers are needed.

Garden clean-up project:  Still scheduled for June 11, 2022

Danville Sycamore Recognition:  As one of the founders of the Danville Sycamore Rotary Club, Glen Weber was a guest speaker at this club’s 33rd Charter night where Jack Graham was honored as one of the original charter members.

Demotion Dinner:  The end of our President’s reign is planned for June 9th at the San Ramon Community Center.

Recognitions
Ray Giles wife Judy celebrated her birthday on May 3rd spending the special evening at the club.  He was recognized $40 for his efforts.

John Milich was fined $50 for just showing up to a meeting.  Great to see one of our ex-Presidents.
Other Birthdays included Kathy Gailey and Geoff Disch.

Art and Wind Preparation

Norbert announced that we desperately needed volunteers to man the Wine and Beer booths on Sunday and particularly Sunday.   All Rotarians are urged to sign up for a spot!

Alan Love offered his truck to move material to and from the event.  There will be two booths, one in a traditional location and a new location near the stage.

Foundation:  Glen confers with Ray and reported that 60% of the members have contributed.  Many who have not contributed also do not attend meetings.  This is a great disappointment in light of contributing to Rotary International is considered an obligation of being a Rotarian as well as an honor.

Bronzini sighting: Marco and his son, Nick, participated in the Smoke Alarm project.  Chris Gayler saw Nick pitch the other night.  With a 92 miles per hour fast ball, 6 feet, 3 inches tall, at 245 LBS, a professional scout was at the game.  Gary Sloan advised Nick to play for the Dodgers but Giant fans objected.  Terry recounted how the son of his administrative assistant was drafted by the Twins in 2016, but the son needed $20 to pay his host family back.  His mother, having heard from the Twins minutes earlier told him to look in his bank account where to his surprise found the $850,000 signing bonus.  It is rumored that Nick knows what his “number” is and plans to attend LSU.

The drawing featured two bottle of wines one of which was won by Ray Giles and the other was won by John Milich.

Next week’s program is “Free and Accepted Masons” by Michael Roberts.
