Greeter Protocol

When you are assigned the duty of being our greeter, you should remember the following:

1. You should be at the meeting by 11:45 AM in order to greet everyone as they come to the meeting.

2. You should bring a "Greeter's Gift" for the raffle. The gift should be approximately $20.00 in value.

3. You will be leading the giving the inspiration of the day, leading the salute to the flag, and introducing the visiting Rotarians. It is a good idea to watch the visiting Rotarians sign in, so that you can ask them about any complicated names or classifications.

4. If you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.

Meeting Notes for March 1, 2018
CROW’S CALL – March 1, 2018

President Lucky Sandhu, “He who Can-Do,” commanded the meeting to order.  After sharing once again his obsession with Ian Riseley of Tasmania, the president of Rotary International, Lucky introduced our Greeter for the Day, Gobind Anand.  Gobind reminded us, in the lyrics from a Sinatra favorite, that today is all we really have.  She is a local realtor and recently transferred to our club from the Dougherty Valley Club.  Mike Thelen led us in the patriotic song that ends in letting “freedom ring.”  Our visitor was our old friend Joyce Castro of the San Ramon Fire District who is a grandmother again for the fourth time.  With that Lucky began the meeting at a break-neck speed.
Announcements:
Dennis Harvey led a membership meeting after our regular meeting today.
Lucky reminds us that we have a District Conference at Tahoe May 4 – 6.  We also have a regional conference in Fairfield on April 4. See Lucky for details.
Dennis Harvey says the Smoke Alarm project is coming on April 28.
Hermann Welm shared that his son won a million dollar grant from the CDC for his cancer research project in Salt Lake City;  his daughter-in-law won a     grant, with a perfect application score, for a two million dollar grant.  Hermann is considering changing from squirrels to chinchillas.
Dennis Harvey tells us that we have a golf game on March 15. Tee up!
Lucky bemoaned the fact that while he had set a goal of having 500 followers on Facebook for the club, we only had 499; Cal High principal Sarah Cranford   solved that problem by friending us right there in the meeting.
Presentations:
Colette Lay and Sarah Cranford honored the School Employee of the Month, Jennie Meads, the office manager for Cal High.  In that capacity Ms. Meads serves as the supervisor of all the support activities in the administrative office, the gate-keeper for the principal and the general go-to person for all things Cal High.  There was no word if she would be awarded a parking place for the month in front of the school.
Ray Giles, in his capacity as Rotary Foundation chair and stern taskmaster made    Mike Thelen stand at attention while he explained why the Rotary     Foundation is one of the most efficient charities.  Only then did Ray bestow  a Paul Harris Fellowship on the chastened Mike.
Lucky revealed that Ana Dominguez has applied for a global grant from Rotary International to support a water project in Bolivia.  Ana is working with a friend who has made a film, “My Bolivia” which was shown on PBS.  The villagers who were the subjects of that film had asked for help getting clean, reliable water.  Hence the grant applications which Ana is hoping will result in $50,000.  If she is successful, we will be fundraising for the project.

Gary Sloan, along with Mark Hornstra and Colette Lay, presented Vanessa of the  San Ramon Valley Education Foundation with a check for $75,989 to  support the Foundation, money raised by our auction efforts.  Vanessa  announced that our club would be honored for all our work on behalf of the Valley’s 34,000 students on an April 18 event. Vanessa will be back with us on June 14 when she will report on specifically what the Ed Foundation  used our money to support.   Gary, who is retiring in July, has already arranged for $5,000 for 2019 auction from San Ramon Regional Hospital and another $5,000 from the Center’s doctors.  Get busy.
Dennis Harvey is compiling an appreciation of our former president Stan Smalley who is suffering from dementia.  Watch for it in coming weeks.
Lucky asked us to send good wishes to Julie Disch who has health challenges.

Program:

Marv Remmich introduced Stacy Appel who is the Director of the Caring Hands Program through John Muir Hospital.  The program provides social contact and help for seniors who wish to stay in their own homes.  Stacy observed that we do not get training on how to age, and consequently life provides us with lots of surprises.  Caring Hands offers social support when it’s needed.  About 420 people take advantage of the operation, which has been around for 20 years.   The volunteers, about 300 who are vetted and trained, work a couple of hours a week with their “care receivers,” as the clients are called.  They may go to a movie, run errands or just talk; it does not provide medical care.  The average age of the receivers is 82, but people in their 60’s are on the waiting list.   The service is free to all residents of the county.  Most of the receivers and volunteers are women; male volunteers are especially sought.  Stacy told of a 98 year-old receiver, legally blind, who had her volunteers drive her to a senior center where she taught line dancing.  The Rotarians asked some good questions and seemed to appreciate the information about the program.  Lucky gave Ms. Appel a certificate of a donation in her name to the San Ramon Library.
Raffle:
Priya Jhingan won the Greeter’s Gift which was a swag bag of accessories for her cool rubber boots.  Edgardo Carrillo drew the magic marble for $220, or rather he spit it into his hand in a sleight-of-tongue trick.  It was allowed since he donated his ill-gotten gains to Interact.  Nice move, Mr. Saddle Shoes!
