Greeter Protocol

When you are assigned the duty of being our greeter, you should remember the following:

1. You should be at the meeting by 11:45 AM in order to greet everyone as they come to the meeting.

2. You should bring a "Greeter's Gift" for the raffle. The gift should be approximately $20.00 in value.

3. You will be leading the giving the inspiration of the day, leading the salute to the flag, and introducing the visiting Rotarians. It is a good idea to watch the visiting Rotarians sign in, so that you can ask them about any complicated names or classifications.

4. If you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY
MADE SIMPLE

We all think we choose what path we take in life, who we socialize and mix with, what views we hold. But those decisions are actually shaped by networks of people - David Brooks. The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST: The Development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. Rotarians have the opportunity to create relationships with many business, professional, and community leaders.

SECOND - High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. Being a Rotarian authenticates the person and their business or profession.

THIRD - The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life. Rotarians nurture this personal characteristic; the cornerstone of building and sustaining relationships.

FOURTH - The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. Rotarians become better world citizens and often build lasting international relationships.

ROTARIANS INFLUENCED BY THE OBJECT OF ROTARY HAVE MADE THEIR FAMILIES, BUSINESSES, COMMUNITIES AND THE WORLD BETTER. WHAT THEY DID IS A BY-PRODUCT OF WHO THEY ARE AND THE IMPACT THE OBJECT OF ROTARY HAD ON THEM PERSONALLY.

Meeting Notes for January 10, 2019
Reminder:
TODAY'S MEETING:  An off-site meeting at California High School Library, with their Interact Club.

By:  Hermann Welm

President John “Copy Cat” Milich opened the meeting by reminding us that the R.I. President is Barry Rassin, of the Bahamas, and his theme for the year is “Be the Inspiration!”  Our Greeter, Anurag Singh, started us in the Salute to the Flag.   His Thought for the Day was from Agatha Christie: “I like living.  I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked in sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing!”

The duet of Jones & Thelen then led us in a rousing rendition of the Patriotic Song, “God Bless America!”

Visiting Rotarians:   None

Other Visitors:  Melanie Emig, Membership Director for the Country Club; and our speaker, Demetra Jaffin of Good Samaritots.

Announcements:

The Copy Cat announced that the next Board meeting will be on Tuesday, January 15, at San Ramon Regional Medical Center, at 7:30 am.  (Since this Scribe will be on duty that time, this will be an opportune time to look him up if you need him to perform any surgery on you!)

Dr Bill “The Bard” Harlan announced that he will be at the UCLA Law School on April 4th, for a talk on Racial and Social Tensions in Shakespeare’s “Othello!”  Then, on April 6th, he’ll be speaking on Henry IV, Part One.  He suggest we mention his name if we want to get into this free event for free!  That’s the kind of amazing influence he has!

Kathy Gailey spoke about the trip she and Cathie Opila made to Kenya in November and the donated school supplies they were able to distribute to children in a Maasai village.  Even though school was not in session at the time of their visit, the teacher was able to gather many of the students to show up for this event.  Kathy then went on to show some slides including of Maasai women repairing a roof and Maasai men dancing.  This caused on unidentified (male) wit to comment about how this division of labor made a lot sense!

Dennis Harvey reminded us that we should discuss Rotary membership with out friends and business associates.  Invite them to one of our meetings so they can get to know more about Rotary.

Glen Weber mentioned that wife, Ginny, will be undergoing some back surgery on January 20th.

Don Jones noted that the next Stop Hunger Now event will be held on February 16th, between 9:00 am and noon.  We’ll need a dozen or so volunteers to join the Interactors for this; please contact him if you can assist!

This Scribe announced that the National Squirrel Appreciation Day, on January 21st, REQUIRES all to be nice to those delightful critters!  Feed them some in-shell walnuts and don’t run over any in the street.  As always, it seems, the Neanderthals in the club couldn’t help themselves and felt obligated to relate their latest outrages against our furry friends! (Names were noted and recorded!)

Good News/Fine Free:   None.

Recognitions:   Brent Tucker for his birthday; Chris Gayler for Natalie’s birthday which is being celebrated by packing moving boxes!

Program:   Demerta Jaffin started the second chapter of “Good Samaritots” in late 2017; the first was started in Pasadena by a school friend of hers.  There are now several other chapters throughout the country an more are forming each month.  Their motto is “Tiny Hands Doing Good Deeds!”

She has had about 24 tots joining in for the 40 meeting so far, with an attendance in the 4 to 10 range.  Most are pre-schoolers because they tend to have meetings during the week.  They meet either on-site or at one of the parents’ homes.

The format for the meetings is to first read a book to them related to the activity they will be undertaking.  They then perform a community service project.  Some of the projects they’ve undertaken are:

  • Red Kettle bell ringing for the Salvation Army.
  • Athan Downs Park Cleanup with an emphasis on recycling.
  • Making cat toys in preparation for a visit to the East Bay SPCA Shelter.  The book they first read was “A House for Charlie,” and they were joined by its author, Fern Dahlstrom, of San Ramon.
  • A Garage Sale for the benefit of the Carr Fire victims; funds were donated to the United Way.
  • A post-Halloween bundling of candy into packets for the VA Hospital patients in Livermore.
  • Their first 2019 project was the construction of bird houses.

Our club’s foundation had made a donation to this organization last year for which Demetra was very thankful.

Raffle:   The Greeter’s Gift of $20.00 was won by PP John Tatum.   The chance of drawing the gold marble was won by Marco Bronzini (again!), but this time, lucky for him, he only drew a blue marble!

Next Week’s Program:   An off-site meeting at California High School, with their Interact Club.
