Greeter Protocol

When you are assigned the duty of being our greeter, you should remember the following:

1. You should be at the meeting by 11:45 AM in order to greet everyone as they come to the meeting.

2. You should bring a "Greeter's Gift" for the raffle. The gift should be approximately $20.00 in value.

3. You will be leading the giving the inspiration of the day, leading the salute to the flag, and introducing the visiting Rotarians. It is a good idea to watch the visiting Rotarians sign in, so that you can ask them about any complicated names or classifications.

4. If you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.

Meeting Notes for April 19, 2018
Crow’s Call for April 19, 2018 by Tom Port
Call To Order: “Can-Do” Sandhu opened with the requisite reminder: Rotary International President is Ian H. S. Riseley of Victoria, Australia, and his theme for the year is “Rotary, Making a Difference”.

Greeter: Julie Fiedler led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. She didn’t have a “Thought for The Day”, but she put out some good vibes so made do with that. Julie is a practicing attorney in elder law and estate planning, and is also a mother of four so we know she has a lot on her mind.

Patriotic Song: Hermann Welm led us in “My Country “Tis of Thee”.

A Somber Note: Sharon Wilcox, the wife of Steve Wilcox and former first lady of our club passed away from a rare illness. She was the mother of three. Services will be held at St. Isadore’s Church next Thursday, April 16 at 10 A.M. with a reception to follow.

Announcements: Glen Weber was taken to task for assisting Pres. Elect John Millich in skipping our meeting. Apparently, Millich was “absent without leave” on the ski slopes. I believe Glen picked up the recognition imposed by an obviously outraged Sandhu.

San Ramon Rotary Recognized: Our club, as well as our outstanding InterAct group were recognized April 18 by the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation. Over the years our club has donated over $300,000 to the SRVEF.

Leadership San Ramon Valley: Jerry Marrs says their fundraiser is Friday at Canyon Lakes Brewery. Check with him for tickets.

Student of the Month: Sarah Cranford awarded Kiernan Hanson, the Student of the Month honor. Kiernan sings in the choir and is active as Council President. Ms. Cranford says he exemplifies the principles of the 4-Way Test.

PROGRAM: “Stoles and Scholarships”.

Colette Lay, with an assist from Gary Sloan and Interact Advisor Scott Hodges, awarded stoles to Jessica Yuan, Connor Jow, Jillian Weber, Rebekah Chappell, Amanda Li, Athena Aghighi, Swetha Sankar, Heidi Kwong, Justin Wong, Liam Shiu, Aproop Kamat and Christine Lou (not present). Those who served on the Board got Interact pins as well.

Gary advised that recipients of stoles as well as those awarded scholarships should that their parents as well as their teachers for “who your are” and “how you were raised”.

Scholarship winners were Rebekah Chappell who will attend U.C. Davis to study psychology, Heidi Kwong who is interested in biology/medicine will attend U.C.L.A. Liam Shiu will attend the U. of Illinois at Urbana, Champaign to study Math, Statistics and Liberal arts. Abigail Fritz will attend Syracuse Univ. to study Journalism. Sakshi Savale will attend San Jose State. Her interest is in biology and social justice. Alexandra Zerbe will attend Univ. of Washington as a pre-med student. She plans to practice in the military.
Scholarship varied in amounts form $500 to $3000.
Jessica Yuan was awarded the single $10,000 (over 4 years) scholarship based on her outstanding work as Interact President, volleyball player, Camp Venture graduate, over 175 hours of volunteer time, too many other awards to mention, 4.75 grade average, varsity mock trial and etc.
She plans to attend the Univ. of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business. Jessica says her work with Rotary and Interact has fundamentally changed her outlook toward her community and the way she communicates.

Dennis Garrison explained the John Sims Memorial Scholarship honors our much loved Rotarian, John Sims, who passed on last year. John was an Annapolis grad, a Navy veteran, a Harvard Grad, a Berkeley PhD, and he taught at Cal. State East Bay (Hayward) for many years. Jessica Yuan was selected to be the first recipient of the John Sims award.
Congratulations to Jessica and to all the stoles recipients and scholarship winners!

Group photos were taken after the lunch.
Raffle: Judy Lewis won the Greeter’s Gift, and Don Jones got a chance at winning the Progressive, but drew a blue ball.
