Weekly Program
Meeting Notes for August 27, 2020

President Chris “Top Gun” Gallagher opened our meeting by reminding us his year’s Rotary International President is Holger Knaack from the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany, and our theme is Rotary Opens Opportunities. The expectation is for Rotarians to create opportunities that strengthen their leadership, help put service ideas into action, and improve the lives of those in need.

Dr. William Harlan was the greeter. After the flag salute he shared his thought for the day, inspired by both the recent wildfires and political conventions:
“Some say the world will end in fire.  Some say in ice.  From what I’ve tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire.  But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to know that for destruction ice is also great and would suffice.” – Robert Frost
WELCOME GUESTS
Three guests joined our meeting:

David Smith, who received a lot of “well hi, David!” from long time members.  He joined us from his home on the east coast.

Linda Green, from President Gallagher’s office wanted to see what he does on Thursday afternoons for an hour.
Karen Stepper, Danville Mayor and our presenter for the day.
An enthusiastic “AAAALLLLOOOHHHHAAAA” welcomed our guests.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
President Gallagher discussed a possible hybrid meeting option sometime in September.  This would consist of 12 members in person, and the remaining members “zooming” in.  The logistics and technology are in the works, and it will be no small feat to make it happen. More information to follow on this possible option.

Don Jones discussed the Socks for the Homeless project.  Club members will be collecting socks during the months of Sept/Oct for distribution in November, with a goal of 5,000 pairs.  Please pick up some adult socks in gray/black or other dark colors next time you make your Target run, or simply order from Amazon.  Dry and warm socks make a big difference for those in need.
Vera Packard announced Lazarex is hosting a Virtual Gala on Sunday, September 20th from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m.  More information and registration can be found at https://lazarex.ejoinme.org/LazarexGala2020

ONLINE AUCTION

Terry Koehne and Norbert Walz discussed this year’s auction.  Both are very pleased with the progress made thus far, but more work is to be done! Gary Sloan confirmed receipt of $22k in corporate sponsorships, with another $12k (hopefully) to be collected. Norbert stressed the importance of COMPLETED DONATION FORMS for those members collecting items.  COMPLETEED DONATION FORMS! Again, COMPLETED DONATION FORMS!
The committee is still looking for “Day in the Life Of” experiences that can be auctioned.  Please contact Kathy Gailey.

RECOGNITIONS
Ed and Linda Duarte celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary on July 25th with a quiet BBQ of tri-tip and lobster tail. Ed’s advice for long term marital bliss is to understand that it is “a game of tolerance and understanding.”
Ray and Judy Giles shared a good bottle of wine to celebrate their 51st wedding anniversary on August 24th.  Ray’s advice for marital endurance?  “Knowing when to hit the mute button.”
Excellent advice, gentlemen!

PROGRAM- TOWN OF DANVILLE

Danville Mayor Karen Stepper provided a State of the Town presentation.  To start, she acknowledged all the extra council meetings taking place while figuring out this new world, and she’s encouraged by the virtual attendance at these meetings.  She gave kudos to the town continuing with events even though we are living in a virtual reality.
At both the beginning and end of her presentation, she encouraged in-person outdoor dining in Danville – it is safe! And there is a real buzz downtown on Thursday/Friday/Saturday, something this scribe can confirm.

Highlights from her talk:
Danville has been named the safest city in California, three years running.  She credits the excellent work done by the police department that prioritizes being part of the community. This includes the virtual “10-8 In-Service Program” held every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. on Facebook Live. It’s designed to reinforce to all residents and businesses that the officers in Danville are here in service to the community.
Hearts on Hartz invites residents and visitors to discover 17 uniquely adorned heart sculptures placed all around downtown. The public art exhibition will run through October 16. The exhibition will come to a close with an online auction.  All proceeds from the online auction will go to a public art fund so that the Town can coordinate another public art project for all to experience in the future.  More information can be found at https://www.danville.ca.gov/785/Public-Art---Hearts-around-Hartz
Danville is currently developing a Bicycle Master Plan, which will serve as a vision and comprehensive long-range plan focused on supporting and enhancing bicycle policies and infrastructure improvements within the Town.  More information available at https://www.danville.ca.gov/735/Bicycle-Master-Plan
Advocating for Local Control – much local control has been taken away from the towns/cities by legislative powers in Sacramento.  Mayor Stepper touched briefly on the commissions and actions being taken by the town to reclaim more local control, including housing development.

Discussing Danville challenges in 2020
Like all towns and cities, Danville is facing a loss of sales tax revenue due to COVID-19.  They have adjusted by making a 15% staff reduction, mostly by natural staff attrition, and have been proactively requesting funding reimbursements through both the CARES Act and other grant funding.
Despite these challenges, the budget remains balances, pensions are fully funded, and the town maintains a Moody’s AAA rating.
After discussing population growth and housing needs, Mayor Stepper closed with a call to action to support local business.  Dine in the restaurants, patronize the stores.  Learn more information about what the town has done to support local businesses, and find what businesses are open  visit https://www.danville.ca.gov/civicalerts.aspx?aid=400
After reading this edition of Crow’s Call, treat yourself and a loved one to lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants in Danville.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:57 p.m.
Stay safe, fellow Rotarians.
Respectfully submitted,
Julie McKinney, Scribe
