Greeter Protocol

When you are assigned the duty of being our greeter, you should remember the following:

1. You should be at the meeting by 11:45 AM in order to greet everyone as they come to the meeting.

2. You should bring a "Greeter's Gift" for the raffle. The gift should be approximately $20.00 in value.

3. You will be leading the giving the inspiration of the day, leading the salute to the flag, and introducing the visiting Rotarians. It is a good idea to watch the visiting Rotarians sign in, so that you can ask them about any complicated names or classifications.

4. If you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY
MADE SIMPLE

We all think we choose what path we take in life, who we socialize and mix with, what views we hold. But those decisions are actually shaped by networks of people - David Brooks. The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST: The Development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. Rotarians have the opportunity to create relationships with many business, professional, and community leaders.

SECOND - High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. Being a Rotarian authenticates the person and their business or profession.

THIRD - The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life. Rotarians nurture this personal characteristic; the cornerstone of building and sustaining relationships.

FOURTH - The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. Rotarians become better world citizens and often build lasting international relationships.

ROTARIANS INFLUENCED BY THE OBJECT OF ROTARY HAVE MADE THEIR FAMILIES, BUSINESSES, COMMUNITIES AND THE WORLD BETTER. WHAT THEY DID IS A BY-PRODUCT OF WHO THEY ARE AND THE IMPACT THE OBJECT OF ROTARY HAD ON THEM PERSONALLY.

MEETING NOTES & DEMOTION DINNER
Meeting Notes for June 27, 2019
San Ramon Rotary Club
Crow’s Call
June 27, 2019

To everyone’s confusion, Ray Giles, (Mr. Rotary) called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m. but quickly relinquished the podium to John (Copy Cat) Milich to conduct his last official meeting of the year. Past Presidents recalled that this is the happiest day in one’s presidency term having successfully completed one year of extraordinary service.  John was even able to recite this year’s Rotary Theme “Be the Inspiration” without reading it from a script or referring to his notes.  He also remembered that Barry Rassin was the R.I. President.  Excitement was in the air as Ray Giles, our Greeter shared that Marie Galbo commented that she had never seen Ray in bright red, the color of his shirt.  In honor of that comment, Ray’s thought for the day was:
“Speak softly and wear a loud colored shirt”.

Excitement was in the air when Teri Milich, the brains behind the President, was introduced for this Awards Luncheon.  John shared that it was an “honor and privilege” to be a part of Rotary and serve as our President for the past year.  He thanked the club for the opportunity to be exposed to the Rotary world and the amazing moments he has experienced during the past 365 days.

Today, John announced that he would be recognizing selected Rotarians for their work in the past year.  Mr. Harvey, Jones and Crawford sent their regrets for not being able to attend the meeting today but wanted to congratulate John on a job well done.
Edgardo reminded everyone that there would be an August 25 Rotary members day out at the Oakland-San Francisco baseball game.  He also shared that “being a Rotarian is a privilege and being a Rotary President is an honor”.  Edgardo echoed the sentiments of the club that John had done a great job this year.
To start things off, John introduced and thanked his Board Members who “made him look good”:

President Elect:         Colette Lay
Past President:          Lucky Sandhu
Treasurer:                 Geoff Disch
Secretary:                   Julie Fiedler
Community Svc.         Karen McNamara
Club Admin.               Chris Gallagher
Youth Services           Gary Sloan
International Svc       Guy Greco
Vocational Svc           Edgardo Carrillo
Public Relations         Priya Jhingan
Foundation                Ray Giles
Sgt. At Arms               Naim Katiby
Programs                   Marv Remmich
A lovely award was given to each Board member with John’s heartfelt appreciation

Fund Raising Events – Award recipients
John introduced the “Mayor of the Art and Wind Festival”, Norbert Walz who asked John if he should give back some of the funds that he may have misplaced.  Actually, Norbert said that if it were not for the remarkable participation of fellow Rotarians, the event would not have been as successful as it was.
Jerry Marrs was also recognized for his herculean work toward managing a successful Auction for Education.  Jerry was off to New York to watch his son play baseball so he was unable to be in attendance.

Red Badge Award
Cathy Opila was recognized as the outstanding new member of the year.  Cathy jumped right into high levels of participation in local and international projects.  John joined the club in recognizing Cathy as a great new addition to the club.

Hammer Award
It takes a lot to surprise Geoff Disch but that is exactly what John Milich accomplished in awarding the Hammer Award to Geoff Disch.  He referred to Geoff as the Rotarian who arrives early and leaves late.  When John did not know what to do he called Geoff.  Upon receipt of the award, Geoff confessed that when he got the call asking him what John should do Geoff called Chris Gallagher.
Hall of Fame
Speaking of surprises, John Milich broke tradition by naming two (2) members to the Hall of Fame:  Brent Tucker and Edgardo Carrillo.   John was impressed by Brent’s Rotary legacy.  Brent’s great grandfather was a Charter Member of the S.F. Club in 1907.  There are four generations of Tucker’s that span more than a century of service.  Brent presented John with gift for the “hair challenged” Rotarian, a hat from the infamous Wicked Eye.  Brent’s son-in-law gave it to him and now Brent is passing it onto John.  Brent has been a member since 1971 and regaled the club with a few stories that cannot be published for the sake of decency.
Edgardo appeared truly touched by the award as evidenced by his surprise and how succinct he was in his acceptance thoughts.  He shared that he loved working with John who always wore Rotary on his sleeve and consistently promoted the Club.  Edgardo loves the San Ramon Rotary Club because it is a group of individuals who DO, not just talk about making a difference in the lives of others.  As an example, he pointed to the $6,000 raised by our club to assist the Paradise Fire victims.
Lifeline Award (also known as the Chris Gallagher Award)
No surprise here.  Chris Gallagher was given the Lifeline Award for coming to the aid of the President on more than one occasion (and probably more than 3).  Chris said he was worried about John at the beginning of the year because you can’t lose control until you have it.  But Chris was reassured by the end of the year that John’s authenticity and love of Rotary overcame all obstacles.

Life Time of Service Award
This award is given to a Rotarian who demonstrated a life long adherence to Rotary Service above self-ideals.  Everyone agreed and positively responded to this award going to Jay Tonz.  Guy Greco who saw Jay yesterday indicated that he was in good spirits and seemed more engaged in his community.  Brent Tucker said that Jay was one of the smartest guys he knew.  He has known Jay for over 50 years and everyone remembers the highlight of our Rotary year when Jay Tonz would give his economic forecast.
Brent shared how intertwined Rotarians lives are.   It seems that Brent and Jay were together in a white Thunderbird in the 1960s when they ran out of gas.  In trying to refuel, the car caught on fire and Jay tried to move the car out of the gasoline to avoid further damage but by then the tires caught fire.  As luck would have it they had run out of gas in front of John Simms house who put the fire out with an extinguisher.  Two years later, Jay hired John to teach at Cal State Hayward.  All three, Brent, Jay and John became Rotarians years later and eventually were reunited at the San Ramon Rotary Club.  Jay was Edgardo’s sponsor to Rotary.

It was suggested that since Jay’s Birthday was July, this award should be presented to his lovely wife, Ann and that we should invite her to club as our guest.

Rotarian of the Year
The most prestigious award of the year was presented to Marie Galbo for her unwavering commitment to the club and community.  Marie was at a loss for words but finally expressed that it was an honor to be a Rotary member.  She sincerely hoped that more people would get involved to know the amazing opportunities available through membership in our Rotary Club in fighting the negativity in the world and discovering the love of people who care.
Closing moments
Dr. Glenn Weber presented John with a citation.
Whereas John Milich:
            -Has not upheld perfect attendance
-Has missed or shortened Board meetings
-Failed to comply with Roberts Rules of Order
-Accepted invitations to ski with another Rotarian on a Thursday at noon
-Used poor judgments in trying to emulate other presidents with bad jokes
-Failed to report his entry back to the U.S. from Canada to ICE authorities

Let it now be known that he will be removed as President of the San Ramon Rotary Club for being too damn nice.  He will be hence forth known as a hard working, nice guy who we are all proud to call friend, fellow-Rotarian and PAST President in perpetuity.

Be it resolved that John’s punishment will be a five on one,  ½ court basketball game following the meeting.

Lucky Sandhu announced that the Demotion Dinner would be held at the Crow Canyon Country Club at 6 pm.

Guy announced his 52nd anniversary to his lovely wife, Mary.

Teri Milich won the raffle for the greeter’s gift ($20) and Chris Gallagher drew the blue marble ($10) missing the chance for $270.

John Milich Demotion Dinner
Special Addition – The Demotion Dinner

I thought it would be nice to share a special evening with those Rotarians who were ill, injured or out of town and unable to attend the Demotion Dinner.  As Past President, Lucky Sandhu was the host for the evening.  A lavishly decorated Basketball themed dinner conceived and executed by Marie Galbo and Kathy Gailey was a great backdrop to the continuously running pictures of John’s life and Rotary tenure.  The video of the basketball extravaganza was entertaining even though we did not capture the spot on shooting prowess of our President.

Lucky began the evening invoking executive privilege to change John’s handle, Copy Cat, to more accurately reflect his passion and ability.  The new handle was MAGIC JOHN in reference to the Magic Johnson similarities.
Gary Sloan, the co-emcee, accused John Milich of using the Toronto Convention last year as a cover to coach up the Toronto Raptors resulting in the defeat of our beloved Warriors.  He also noted that John was the shortest tenured Rotarian to become President but was able to significantly advance the Club during his year.
Lucky announced the first award recipients of our Basketball themed dinner.  Most Injured Player went to Norbert Walz who fell on his face while setting up the wine and beer booth for the Art and Wind Festival.  Lucky noted that the fall resulting in a black eye and broken nose improved Norbert’s profile.   Mark Hornstra was also accused of facilitating the accident (aka. Tanya Harding).  Mark was undergoing extradition charges from Africa.
Jerry Marrs was also award the Most Injured Player award for the nervous breakdown he suffered during the season as he guided the club to a successful championship Auction for Education event this year.  Don Bierman accepted the award on Jerry’s behalf as he will be leading this year’s Auction.
The Best Rookie of the Year was awarded to Cathy Opila (Red Badge winner) but all new members were recognized along with the absent Dennis Harvey who as membership chairperson was rumored to be in Mammoth recruiting new members.
Dr. Bill Harlan submitted an Ode to John Herewith is the Ode in its entirety:

WHERE IS MILICH AND WHY?

One of the vicarious pleasures of John Milich’s term as president has been learning about all the exotic places he has gone instead of our club on Thursday and the fanciful reasons for his absences.  Here are the Top Ten locales and his excuses:

10.       Teri and I had to stay an extra week in Toronto after the RI Convention.  We checked into a Motel Six which offered a “Stay Two Nights and Get an Extra Five Nights for Free” program.  We didn’t want to disappoint the owners.  They were very nice.

9.         I was intimidated by Geoff Disch rolling his eyes when I observed that the Rotary budget is just a suggested guideline.

8.         Last Thursday was my Saint’s Day.  I was named for St. John of Zagreb, patron saint of photocopiers, who was famous for turning wine into toner fluid.

7.         I was commanded to attend special workshop at Rotary headquarters in Evanston, Illinois.  I had to learn that making a motion and seconding it does not mean that it is approved.  You still have to count hands.

6.         I’m sorry I missed Thursday’s meeting.  I was over in San Mateo County and stopped by Mavrick’s to catch some waves.  Actually I was at Mavrick’s Antiques in Brisbane where they were having a sale on all their Beach Boys memorabilia. Hang Ten!

5.         I stayed up Wednesday night to watch the All-European volleyball finals featuring Lithuania versus Luxemborg and over slept

4.         My therapist says I should not go into the backroom at the club again. Mo made me look through the big gold box of memories and confront the broken dreams of all the previous presidents. (Mo says that the last person to handle this stuff owns it!) Too traumatic!

3.         I was down in Watsonville for the Wild Katz Daze reunion.  We raced down Hecker Pass and T.P. ‘ed the coach’s house just like the old days.

2.         Last Thursday was X Day for all the former Xerox employees when we drop our drawers and photocopy our butts as a religious ritual.

  1. I honestly forgot where the Country Club is located.  I only attended three meetings before you guys made me agree to be your president.  I’m still learning the ropes.

Brilliant work.

Lucky announced the Best Team Player from amongst the nominees of Priya, Ana, Julie, Kathy, Guy, Karen and Colette.  Colette prevailed because she is always able to get members to do whatever she wants because we are all so afraid of her.
Gary noted our Best Defensive Players of the year, guarding our club traditions and ensuring club harmony and defensive rhythm.  The nominees of Pat, Don, Ray, Brent, Edgardo and Geoff were examined.  Geoff Disch got the nod for this award
After Lucky explained that he barely knew the game of Basketball leaning more toward Cricket and pointed out the English was his fourth language, he proceeded to share what he learned about Basketball terms in preparation for the Most Assists and Rebounds award.

Dribble – Marie Galbo who always advanced the ball while assisting others
Double Dribble – Stacey Litteral and Bill Harlan who led two Rotary events each during the year
Rebound – Chris Gayler for his well organized Teacher of the Year Award
Backdoor cut – Mike Thelen for orchestrating Student of the Month
Setting a Screen – Patti Hennigan for her excellent work on Scholarships.

And the winner was Marie Galbo who always picked up the ball, filled the lanes when others neglected to “pick and roll” or set up a “transition defense”
Most Three Point Plays (aka Splash brother award) was selected on the basis those Rotarians who gave of their time and/or financial resources generously.  The candidates were Dennis Garrison, Brent Tucker, Marv Remmich, John Tatum and Geoff Disch.  The winner was our Program Chair Marv Remmich.
Best Bench Player was selected from those Rotarians who contributed to the team in meaningful ways and who  was always willing to contribute when called off the bench.  Carolyn, Tom, Terry and Judy were in this category with Tom Port announced as the winner.
Best Assistant Coach was conceived to recognize all the “Acting Coaches” and “Coach Advisors” when John was out of town.  No less that eight candidates were selected due to the frequency of John’s absences.  It was presumed that this was a secret well-planned strategy by Coach John to engage Past Presidents to energize the club.   The winner of this award was Chris Gallagher whose advice we all take whether we want to or not.
Gary celebrated the diversity of our club that was not longer the bastion of white old men.  In recognition of this fact Gary selected more mature, Caucasian Rotarians to stand then realized that this important, contributing group of people were essential to the club and asked that they all be seated so that we could recognize Ana Dominquez for getting approval for the Bolivia Water Project after five long years.

The last award went to the Fan of the Year, Teri Milich.  She stuck by the team, encouraged the coach and has been a delight to get to know.  After receiving a bouquet of flowers to Teri, John received his Past President’s Gift and a Basketball signed by club members who were present for this lovely evening.

Please congratulate John for making Rotary GREAT AGAIN and remember to RSVP to Gary Sloan in anticipation of the Inauguration Party on July 20th for Colette Lay, our new President.

(Lucky – Good Job on this demotion dinner)

Best,

Gary Sloan, Scribe
